A National Justice Forum on Sexual Assault

The AIJA hosted A National Justice Forum on Sexual Assault on Friday, 2 August – Sunday, 4 August 2024, at the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Banco Court.

The conference was sponsored by the Australian Government as part of its implementation of the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032. This is an important initiative intended to continue to build and enhance justice sector capacity for the better support and protection of victims and survivors of sexual assault. The AIJA conference, which was developed by members of the judiciary for members of the judiciary, was a forum for discussion and idea generation and was also open to members of the profession and those with whom the judiciary interacts.

Under the same Commonwealth grant, the National Judicial College of Australia has been funded to deliver a complementary training program for members of the judiciary called ‘Managing Sexual Assault Hearings’.

The conference assembled eminent speakers from the judiciary and the profession, leaders in research, and specialists in mental health to discuss a range of critical topics. The conference dinner featured internationally acclaimed playwright, Suzie Miller.
