This is the fourth edition of the Guide to Judicial Conduct. On 18 October 2024 the Council of Chief Justices of Australia and New Zealand agreed to Terms of Reference for a review of the third edition of the Guide published in 2017 to update it and address, among other things, the use of artificial intelligence tools by judicial officers, the scope of judicial education and training, and enhanced guidance on post-judicial activities. A working group comprising the Hon Chief Justice Peter Quinlan, the Hon Chief Justice Lucy McCallum and the Hon Chief Justice Helen Bowskill was formed to provide oversight of the review. A committee for the review of the Guide was led by the Hon Virginia Bell AC SC as principal reporter and comprised the Hon Justice Murray Aldridge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia and then President of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration, Professor Gabrielle Appleby of the University of New South Wales and Professor Judith Cashmore AO of the University of Sydney. Secretariat support was provided by the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration.
