Vale The Hon Malcolm Blue KC

The President, Board and Council members of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) mourn the passing of the Hon Malcolm Fraser Blue KC, born 12 August 1954 in North Adelaide. Malcolm retired only last month from the Supreme Court of South Australia having served there for 13 years.  Malcolm also served as a reserve Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Malcolm was a longstanding and valued member of the Board of the AIJA, and had served as Chair of the Research Committee and Treasurer since 2016. His contribution to the AIJA was exemplary. Malcolm had served South Australia’s judiciary for 13 years, and the broader legal profession for 47 years.

Malcolm sat on some of South Australia’s most high profile civil and criminal cases, including the Robert Fitzsimmons’ death in 2014, the Hillier triple murders in 2016, and the dispute over defects at the New Royal Adelaide Hospital totalling some $360,000,000.

Malcolm has been lauded as a “gentle and brilliant” legal identity, a “great South Australian who served his community exceptionally well over a long period of time”, and most importantly a much-loved partner, brother, and father of three.

Chief Justice Chris Kourakis has acknowledged the profound contribution of Malcolm to South Australia, speaking of a “pre-eminent intellect and jurist who selflessly devoted his energy to the work of the court and making justice more accessible to the people of South Australia”.

He will be sorely missed.
